Fimo and fineliners

Well it has been another busy week, but high time I posted. For my birthday I got a very shiny Wacom tablet, which I am currently trying to get the hang of. Hopefully when I become a little more proficient I’ll upload some digital work.
In the meantime I did some more observational drawing, and I’m continuing to draw various items of an edible nature. Condiments, although undeniably delicious, do not hold my attention as well as, say, a banana.

The banana, in watercolours and brown fineliner over the top. The pens I use tend to bleed a little if you use them on wet paper, which I thought added quite a nice effect in places, although unintended.

HP Sauce. Just watercolours and fineliner for that one~ the label turned out okay in places I think, but I didn’t do the bottle itself justice. It might have looked a little better if I’d left the outline in pencil rather than inking it in.

A pepper this time. I like yellow peppers better, but I couldn’t draw any because they went in the stir fry we had on my birthday (Chinese food is my kryptonite). :3

Just a quick sketch in pencil and then I used soft pastels to colour it. I enjoy using pastels although I became a little carried away in the process and managed to snap one in half. It’s not quite the right shape either, but it does vaguely resemble a vegetable, hopefully.
I’d meant to get hold of some modelling clay for my birthday as the clay I have at the moment is quite difficult to work with. It’s air-drying, which means you have to mould quickly, and it doesn’t stay moist for as long as oven-bake clay.
Luckily for my Animation brief last semester I’d bought some Fimo. Fimo is pre-coloured; very easy to work with as it's so soft, and comes in a range of colours (Hobbycraft and Granthams both have a big selection). It is a little expensive and you can only buy it in relatively small amounts, but it’s very versatile.

Using the drawings I'd already done, I made some tiny versions of my objects.

This is before they went in the oven (I didn’t make the table, sadly)...

...and this is after they’ve been baked and worked into. I used fineliners for the detail on the bananas, and the labels on the bottles and can were just a white office sticker cut down to size and drawn on.

Just to give you an idea of the scale. The big one’s 17cm tall, the little one is about 2½ cm. :3
When I was rooting around looking for something to present them on, I found lots of little things I’d made a few years ago. It feels really odd looking back at old work (I cringe mostly -___-), or finding pieces you’ve forgotten about, especially something which you put so much love into.

They’re badly faded, especially the darker colours, but I was surprised to find so many of them intact. I do remember making the Swiss roll, as I felt quite proud of it at the time. :D Looking back it is so much easier to study the object and draw it first before making it. Making things up from scratch is fine but it doesn’t produce the same results.
I keep meaning to redo a lot of old work. I also have to make a costume (possibly two) for events at the end of July, go to some galleries (and hopefully a degree show or two), as well as continue with other personal projects I've set my heart on finishing, despite distractions. I'll get round to them one by one.
Until next time, thank you for visiting! <3
