fish and felt

An artist I found a few days ago, the illustrator James Davies:

He does a lot of children’s illustrations as well as working in stitch, making sort of character crafts, and in 2008 he wrote a children’s book called ‘The Monster and Grub’ which was highly commended by Macmillan. I love his drawing style, it reminds me a little of Quentin Blake’s with the washed out colour, and his characters are really funny. They show a lot of personality even if the image of them is just a tiny thumbnail.

‘The Monster’ and ‘Grub’ from his story
(named after both characters).

I got a bit carried away looking through his work, and just wanted to post everything. But he has a blog here and a tumblr where you can see all his other work and sketchy sorts of things.

I also made a tiny quick version, in his style, of our hamster Alfie in his flying gear, as I was unable to help myself:

I had to make him quite a bit smaller than intended due to a shortage of felt, but it’s definitely a method of working I enjoy. I’ll no doubt do more in the future, but spend more time on it now I have a better idea of how things will turn out.

Cake or gallery, that is the question? Next update I shall see. Until then thanks for stopping by~ <3
